What I like about Plath's drawing of a cat is that it captures Plath's engagement with the world. She was not merely the self-absorbed person and writer that appears in so many accounts of her. Also, did you know she had a cat named Sappho? There is a nice passage about the cat in Plath's journals. This is all fresh in my mind because I have just completed AMERICAN ISIS: THE LIFE AND ART OF SYLVIA PLATH, which St. Martin's Press will published on January 22, 2012.
