Going
Only humans believe
there is a word for goodbye
we have one in every language
one of the first words we learn
it is made out of greeting
but they are going away
the raised hand waiving
the face the person the place
the animal the day
leaving the word behind
and what it was meant to say

ReplyDeleteI love W.S. Merwin's poetry. The Shadow of Sirius is an increadable work in itself.
Although I've lost several pets in my lifetime, two (one dog and one cat) were situations where the loss was expected over a period of time. They were quite emotionally draining experiances. I took the loss very hard so I know what it can be like.
I hope that you are able to draw some strength from those close to you. I can tell from your posts that you are very much there for Otis and I know that is so important.
Thinking of you and Otis today. I'm so sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteHi Kate,
ReplyDeleteOtis is still here! Today was very rough, but we are back from the vet's office and he may be visiting there everyday, but he has a little bit of fight still in him...Each moment is now a gift....
oh good! Man, I'm glad I totally mis-read your post. Here's a wish for good health, then, instead of consolation. xok
ReplyDeleteI love this poem -- W.S. Merwin not only gets it but puts it so eloquently. And the Otis photo is gorgeous ... so glad he is hanging in there and that you are enjoying each moment you have. xox
