Naked Self Promotion - Letter to the End of the Year

I hope you will forgive this indulgence, but Verse Daily is a 24 hour gig. It's been a number of years since I've been up on their site. Today's poem is one of my favorite from The Alchemist's Kitchen and it feels good to see it there.

Today is also the open house at Hedgebrook from 1:00 - 4:00. I'll be reading along with the wonderful poet Elizabeth Austen. If you're in driving distance you should come --- the food is always amazing and the day calls for a road trip!

  3. Lovely to see your work on Verse Daily, Susan, and thanks for alerting us to the link. I like this poem; it has a nice weighty ache to it you could almost put in your pocket.

  4. I'm glad for the self promotion, or else I probably wouldn't have read it. And it proved to be what I needed this morning. Thanks. Lovely poem.

  5. A wonderful poem. Mortality and pinecones, with a bit of impatience... for the approaching End of the Year(s. I love the sense of acceptance. Thank you.

  6. Thank you so much for these generous comments. This was one of the first poems I wrote in my writing studio (read: converted old garage) and so it is a magical place marker for me. When I converted the garage ( two years ago) it made me take myself more seriously as a writer and the writing -- at least for awhile -- seemed to grow. "Letter to the End of the Year" was also written during Seattle's worst weather in years -- snow so high that I needed fishing boots to walk across my backyard. Roads were closed and it seemed a time out of time. I think that's where this poem came from.
